A higer numeric value means a lower gear ratio. If you install a 3.73 instead of a 3.45, then when you are doing 70 on the highway, the engine speed will be higher than it is today. If your car currently does 3,000 rpm at 70, then the new ratio will cause 3,250 at 70.

As part of my job was evaluating competitive vehicles as well as casting a jaundiced eye on our own vehicles, I've sat in a lot of seats. I'm not talking about buick vs BMW differences, but 330+lbs (e46 coupe & 'vert weight difference) is absolutely noticeable.
